I sometimes sound like a stuck record, I advocate blogging to many clients and even friends. Your website isn’t ranking well? Then learn how to blog. You want to travel more and still earn money? Then learn to blog. Before you go any further, you may want to read an article that I published a few years ago called Why Do I Need To Be Blogging. (opens in new window) Come back here once you’ve read that.
Two Reasons Why People May Want To Learn How To Start A Blog
- They already have a business website, blogging will enhance their existing website by creating relevant content to the products or services that they sell and if done correctly will boost their search engine rankings and customer conversions. Google loves new content and so do people who are looking to buy new products and services. The amount of businesses that I deal with that want their websites to consist of images and little amounts of text is mind blowing. If you insist on having an arty looking website with minimal text then you’re going to struggle to rank well on Google, unless of course, you add a blog too.
- Because they want to make a career, part or full time from blogging. People type questions into the search bar of Google and Bing (and other search engines) at an alarming rate. Think about how many times that you’ve done it yourself “How do I fold a pocket square?”, “How do you make custard?” The list is endless. The internet has become an invaluable resource allowing anyone to get instant information about virtually any topic. By becoming a blogger who is focused on a particular subject, you can earn anything from a part time income to a full time income beyond your dreams. How? I hear you ask, we’ll get into that later but rest assured that there are many forms of income and passive income available to you if you’re serious about blogging.
Why This Is The Best Free Blogging Tutorial
My daughter turns 30 this year, despite having a good job as an office manager within the recycling industry, she often feels that she could do more with her life. For the past few years, this has manifested itself in her wanting to learn new skills. Usually, around January time, she’ll tell me that she’s thinking of enrolling on a course, usually something like Microsoft engineer or cad design. She’s a bright girl and she likes to learn but her desire to learn doesn’t normally have any end goal. It’s just a vague desire to do something worthwhile.
So, one afternoon in January 2017 she arrived at my house for coffee. As usual, it was January and she indicated a desire to do something different. I listened to her for a while and then asked her why she doesn’t blog. Now Emma knows what I do for a living, She knows that I specialise in marketing and have mentored many people in SEO and blogging. As a result, I suppose she’d kind of discounted it whenever I’d mentioned it. This time however, she listened, asked questions and I could see that the penny had dropped and that I’d sparked her interest.
Emma, for many years has made cakes. I’m not talking cup cakes although she has made several fabulous batches, I mean celebration cakes. Everything from the most elegant tiered wedding cakes to fun cakes such as replicas of the Millenium Falcon from Star Wars. She’s perfected her craft over the years and is exceptionally good at what she produces. She’s made lots of cakes mainly for friends and family, even though I’m her Dad and therefore perhaps a little biased, I can hand on heart say that her cakes really are something to behold. With that in mind, she has a skill that will provide a basis for a full time blogging career if she wished.
I got to talking to Emma about how the blog could be monetised and how, after some initial hard work and some dedication to ongoing work, she could see returns way in excess of her current annual salary. This isn’t just about money however. With technology being what it is, earning your living online allows you freedom that conventional employment simply can’t. As I’ve said previously, Emma is a bright girl, you could see her interest intensify as she understood the opportunities that lay ahead.
I put it to her that if she felt like it’s something she could roll with then I’d be happy to hold her hand and document the progress along the way. Emma gets to be mentored as a blogger and I get to document it to share as a step by step, blogging tutorial for beginners. This is a real case study, it allows you to interact with us as we go along on our Facebook group. You can grow with us. It isn’t just a boring online blog tutorial.
Who Is This Blogging Course For?
I have a Facebook group called Coffee With Steve (feel free to join) where like minded people in business of all sizes share ideas, ask questions etc. Last year, some members asked me to plan a blogging workshop. In essence, the idea was that we’d book a venue for an entire weekend and during this time I’d deliver an intensive course on blogging for beginners. We did some research and despite our best efforts, the cost per head including accommodation, meals etc was a little out of budget for some.
This, series of posts, will deliver the same step by step blogging tutorials as I would have done in the course, the major plus is that it’s a real case study of someone setting up a blog from scratch. If you’re already in business and have a website ( or are considering one), or, you’ve always fancied being a blogger but didn’t know where to start or even how a blog makes money then this course is for you. You’ll be able to follow along each week and replicate our steps. If there’s a question you have then use the comments section or even better, head over to our Facebook Group.
I use the word course quite lightly. This is more of a step by step documentation of how we go about creating a blog for Emma, how we decide on a domain name, hosting, a theme for the blog etc. Then how we’ll go about organising her topics, the format for her blog posts, the ideas for her blog titles and so on. From there, we’ll look at how we get followers and traffic to the blog and then how we monetise the blog so that it can one day (assuming she continues to put the effort in) provide her with a full time income.
The internet is full of successful marketers, online entrepreneurs and bloggers, the one thing they have in common is that they all use WordPress. Pat Flynn from Smart Passive Income, Glen from Viper Chill and more recently Gaps and Gael and Mark from Authority Hacker, each one of these successful websites run WordPress. It doesn’t need any other introduction than that. So, whether you’ve considered Blogger, or any other platform on which to launch your blog then please, don’t take my word for it. Do your research, visit the successful blogs listed above and see what these guys have to say about using WordPress.
So, let’s get started. We’ll be be updating once a week simply because we both have other work commitments. We’ll post updates on the Facebook group that I’ve mentioned earlier. Be sure to join the mailing list too so that you don’t miss anything. Click the link below to continue.
