Facebook pages have had a rough ride over the past 12 months. We’ve spoken before about how Facebook has throttled back the exposure that posts and status updates get thanks to their Edge Rank algorithm. This change came about for many reasons, not only because Facebook wants you to pay to get your business posts seen but also they are trying to customise and clean up people’s news feeds.
Despite you having hundreds or thousands of likes on your page, unless you pay to boost your posts, your updates will only be visible to a very small percentage. It’s been a problem for some time and one that is constantly debated.
Your Secret Weapon!
So, whilst Facebook pages are suffering visibility issues you can either choose to continue bitching about it or take a fresh look and use leverage to gain visibility. Normal Facebook profiles don’t suffer this same visibility problem, If they post on Facebook it is visible to all their friends.
How can you leverage this? By getting clients to check in when they’re at your premises.
When someone checks in on Facebook, the activity is shown to ALL their friends. Each time this happens, it’s putting your business in front of hundreds if not thousands of people for FREE! None of the usual visibility throttling that we see on pages, the post INCLUDING the link to your business page will appear on your clients Facebook profile and will be visible to ALL their friends! RESULT!
How To Allow Facebook Check-Ins
To let people check-in at your business on a Page you manage, you’ll need to choose ‘Local Business’ for your Page’s category.
SIDE NOTE: Facebook now also allow this feature for other categories, for instance, Companies & Organisations: Education. You’d need to experiment with this to see what other categories also work.
If your Page’s category is Local Businesses:
- Click the ‘About’ link below your Page’s cover photo.
- Click ‘Page Info’ in the left column.
- Click the little pencil icon to edit the Address section, add your address and click Save Changes. After saving your changes, a map will appear in this section.
- Click to edit the Address section again. Below the map, click to check the box next to Show map, check-ins and star ratings on the Page.
- Click Save Changes.
How To Get People To Check In To Your Business On Facebook
Quite simply, ask them! Have a sign or sticker in prominent areas, near the doors, in changing rooms, toilets, on counters etc. Offer small rewards, maybe 10% off or a small gift in return for checking in.
If you’re in the service business, maybe a nail salon or hairdressers then get them to check in and add a photo, you wouldn’t believe the power of that! Your reach will go through the roof!
I’ve designed an A5 size sticker that will prompt people to check in at your business, you can buy them here at £3.95 each (free postage in the UK)
