For those of you who don’t know what a host is then here’s a short explanation. For those who do skip to the next section.
What Is Hosting?
Hosting is essentially space on a computer that is permanently connected to the internet. This computer is known as a web server and it’s job is to store all the files associated with a website and to serve those files whenever they are requested (if someone views your website). Generally there are thousands of websites on each server and so the servers themselves are usually very powerful and fast in order to cope with demand.
Can I Host My Own Website?
You could, but that would be like asking if your could refine your own fuel for your car. To host your own website you’d need a special internet connection, a web server, knowledge of how to configure a web server and some rather complicated software. Generally, for the low price it’s worth having your website hosted elsewhere.
Choosing A WordPress Host
There are so many web hosting companies out there. A lot are simply resellers and aren’t hosts at all. They simply sell the services of the host and take a cut. You’ll find lots of information on the internet about hosting and some of it can be quite confusing. If you’re planning to have a WordPress website then you’ll need a host who offers Linux hosting. Ideally you’ll want a host who also has Cpanel which is a type of control panel software. Ideally, you’ll also want a host that offers superb customer service and if you’re a novice you’ll want everything to be as simple as possible. I use a couple of hosts. The one I can highly recommend is Bluehost for the simple reasons that they are cheap, they offer excellent customer service and they are aimed at people wanting to build a WordPress website. I have several websites with them. Installing WordPress on your Bluehost account is simply just one click!
